I was born in the strange and old and misrepresented city of Pittsburgh in 1987, sometime in the early evening. The first music I can remember hearing came from a cassette played in my dad’s car as we drove home from Monroeville mall one summer. Steely Dan’s Aja was the album, and I still play it occasionally, although I’ve found I prefer their first two albums (Can’t Buy a Thrill and Countdown to Ecstasy) just a shade bit more. I received my high school education in Western PA, spending most of my time listening to Wu-Tang Clan and Marvin Gaye, MF DOOM, too. During college at the University of Pittsburgh I found music that wasn’t rap or R&B (Tom Waits, Television, Nick Cave, etc.). Sometimes, I’m not convinced this was an improvement.
Right now, I live in Brooklyn.
